        'mycobacterium leprae' - the cause of  leprosy or

         Hansen's disease

 Altough leprosy presumably came to Jamaica with Europeans and Africans from the 16th century, it is not too easy to find references to the disease, and especially its treatment, before the time of Emancipation in the 1830s; I'm working on it!
