Swithland Woods, oil plein air sketch, approx 12in

The subject of woods and tangled undergrowth is a complete contrast to the wide open spaces of my seascapes but it is equally fascinating.  I became interested in the pattern, colours and texture of the bark of the beech trees in local woodland - many were covered in eyes.

I never work directly from photographs but often stick my photos in my sketchbooks as part of the memories of a place, time and day.
